TASTING & HOW TO
Carmo Estate Brazil. Yellow Bourbon. Natural.

Every bean has a story
For over 150 years, the Junqueira Family's generations have dedicated their lives to coffee cultivation. As traditional coffee growers in the Southern part of Minas Gerais state in Brazil, they have devoted themselves to produce the best coffees at Carmo Estate over the last 30 years.

CARMO ESTATE

The estate boasts privileged natural conditions, fertile land and the right choice of coffee varieties. These, combined with well trained workers and state-of-the-art facilities where coffee is carefully processed, are some of the factors that contribute to the high quality of Carmo Estate coffees. Dedication and attention to detail are some of the major focus points at Carmo Estate in order to offer the best natural, pulped natural and varietal coffees.

Tulio Junqueira's passion for this activity is the fuel that keeps the farm going. He shares his vision with the entire team and makes sure they all feel part of this activity. Lu Junqueira, Tulio's wife, is also involved with the farm management. She's been a doctor her whole life and is very committed to the social part of Carmo Estate. This translates to taking care of the worker's well-being, health and safety guidelines and trainings. The farm offers training courses and free health care for all employees and residents, as well as a fair income.

IMPROVING PROCESS & QUALITY

To keep improving its process and quality, Carmo State became a Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association member. They adopted the UTZ Certification and follow rigorous standards based on that and the family experience to help preserve the environment and grant a good quality of life for all workers involved in their production. The Farm has, in its structure, a laboratory, so that samples go through evaluation as soon as each batch is ready. In addition, it counts on the quality support of SMC Specialty Coffee to taste the specialty coffees and to act as a bridge between its clients.

In addition to the coffee planting and preparation areas, Carmo Estate has more than 45% of its land in native forest. This means very rich fauna and flora, besides springs and waterfalls, properly protect the estate. This ensures a much more balanced micro-climate and demonstrates the concern of Tulio and his family with the environment.

The farm's entire preparation structure receives energy derived from photovoltaic plates. With investments in innovation, the positive results were not long in coming. In 2023, he won 5th place in the Especialíssimo awards, a specialty coffee program developed by Cooxupé and SMC. This achievement shows his commitment to producing excellent coffees, as well as being the result of the strong relationship he has with both the cooperative and SMC.

Tasting notes
Imagine a vanilla caramel cake! A well-balanced combination of sweet and indulgent flavors, the vanilla and caramel create a luxurious foundation, while the brown sugar and bakers chocolate contribute a touch of sophistication. The medium round body and low acidity make it a truly enjoyable coffee – the perfect choice for those who appreciate a subtly sweet and rich cup.
