Santa Claus - also known as Santa, Saint Nick, Father Christmas, or Kris Kringle—is one of the most beloved figures of Christmas. According to tradition, he travels the world on Christmas Eve, delivering gifts to children while they sleep. His toys are made by cheerful elves in his workshop, and his sleigh flies through the night sky, pulled by magical reindeer.
The story of Santa Claus begins with Saint Nicholas, a kind bishop who lived in the 4th century. He was famous for his generosity and for secretly giving gifts to children in need. Over time, his legend blended with other Christmas traditions, including the English Father Christmas. Together they became the Santa we know today.
In pictures, we usually see Santa as joyful and warm-hearted, with a white beard, round glasses, and a bright red suit trimmed with white fur. He carries a big bag of gifts and is known for his famous, happy laugh: “Ho, ho, ho!”
The modern image of Santa was shaped in the United States during the 19th century. A famous poem from 1823, A Visit from St. Nicholas, described him flying in a sleigh pulled by reindeer on Christmas Eve. Since then, Santa has become a symbol of Christmas magic, appearing in songs, stories, films, and family traditions all around the world.
Early Depictions: Before Nast, Santa's attire varied, often green, blue, or brown.
Bishop's Robes: St. Nicholas was often depicted in red bishop's robes, influencing later images.
Thomas Nast: Illustrated Santa in a red suit with fur trim, but sometimes also green or other colors.
Coca-Cola (1931): Haddon Sundblom's iconic ads cemented the cheerful, plump Santa in his red-and-white suit, aligning with Nast's earlier vision and becoming the definitive look.
